Platform: VAX
OS: OpenVMS V6.2
$U version: 4.3

We have a customer environment using $U as stated above. Recently we have been facing frequent hang of $Universe resulting in job new jobs getting submitted and jobs found in "Executing" state for a long time than expected.

Only $U restart fixes the problem to put things back on track.

IU_RTS is scheduled to run every week and there seems to be no error. What are the various things that needs to be checked so that I can get a clue on this peculiar behaviour. Another server at the same site with same configuration has been running fine without any issues.

Look forward you expertise in fixing this issue permanently.

Dollar Universe 4.3 on VAX VMS

Not many customers still use this one! I used to work with it a decade ago!!

My advice would be to stop Dollar Universe, and convert (with convert /fdl) the data files. This always proved useful.

At the time, I changed the IU_RTS script delivered by Orsyp to transform all "convert /reclaim" by "convert /fdl" with the creation of a new fdl file each time.

If you have a Dollar Universe 5.0 on VMS (AXP/Alpha or Itanium), you can see in the IU_RTS how to do it.

Then if you regularly run the IU_RTS the problem should never appear.

One thing though: When the reorgnaization runs, no files should be open by a job, an interface (local or remote), etc. otherwise the file will be locked and will not be converted.

Hello Men,

Thanks for your inputs. I will compare the IU_RTS with V5.0 and make the changes accordingly as suggested by you.

With regard to running IU_RTS, we will verify the logs and ensure no jobs are running.

Option to migrating to is impossible as Customer is not ready for it.
