CDJ engine taking a lot of time to start

Hi,

we are experiencing some problems with our main server when restarting $U: all the services and engines start straigh away except the CDJ service which takes around 45mins to start. During that time the server uses 100% of the CPU as the CDJ process takes as much resource as it can and we cannot see the jobs running on the server in Univiewer.

I believe this is dependant on the reorganisation politic and the size of the history files however we run an online reorganisation every night and we keep "only" 6 month history (220k jobs) which is a lot but not enough for me to explain this duration. On the server the execution history data file u_fmhs50.dta is about 700Mb.
This weekend we did a maintenance work on the server and in the meantime I stopped $U and ran an offline reorganisation which improved the CDJ start by 15mins but it is still too long.

Does anyone know exactly why it takes so much time for the CDJ engine to be operational and if we can do something about that?

Thanks,
Cyrille
(this is a Windows 2003 server with DUAS 5.3.3 FX24800A installed)

Solved : online(continuous) purge questions

Hello,

we've recently replaced uxpurge by officially recommended continuous (online) purge (UNIX), with retentions set generally to 10 days.

I'd like to ask you for help regarding following questions:

1)
It seems, that the online purge doesn't perform cleanup of entries in execution history for aborted uprocs, which were relaunched - I assumed, that these are covered by U_RETENTION_DELAY_ABORTED variable.
Or will the entry be purged automatically later together with the cleanup of newer record created as result of job relaunch ( once the retention period for the new entry is reached)?

Purge of other entries in execution history/launch is behaving correctly.

2)
The intervention and distribution history is not being considered - is the way to make them considered by continuous purge?

3)
There is no visible evidence, that the continuous purge is active and dta files are being processed by it.
Is there any configuration variable, which could be applied in order to be able trace the continuous purge process/progress?

Thanks for your help and advices in advance.

Kind regards,

Peter

Solved : Dollar Universe Desktop / Execution timing problem

Hello all,

preliminary informations:

OS=windows XP
$U-Version=5.3.1

When I try to display the list of executions of a specific node, the buildup lasts about 10 minutes . Pressing "ESC"-Button
you will either see an uncompleted list or a completed list of executions, it depends on the time you will wait before pressing ESC.
Only my administrative client is affected. The other clients are working normally (max. 30 sec.)

I tried this with a long execution-list (6000 entries) and with short (80 entries). There is almost no difference between the holding times.

I checked the uniserve.log-file and saw a list of unreachable nodes. So I deleted this nodes from the "node" and "MU" definitions and from the "uxsrsrv.sck"-file.

After that I stopped $U, did a reorganisation and started $U.

Now, there are no more errors in the logs-files, this is the onliest success.

Trying to display the executions still lasts very long, but there are no errors listed in the logfiles.

There is another confusing situation:
Not all nodes are affected. There are nodes with much more entries than 6000 and the holding time for display the execution list is only half a minute at most.

I don't no what's wrong.

Thank you
lmotu

Solved : Large data file

HP Unix server, $U 5.2.3, offline backup followed by a reorg each week.

All works fine but have noticed space warnings now as the backup is getting biggeer and bigger. Checking the reorg also noticed a very large data file u_fmcm 50 in the production area, 146851826 bytes with correspondingly large index, 14721141 bytes.

The reorg of this structure is taking nearly 50 minutes on a fast machine. There are other structures which as also starting to creep in size, for instance u_fmhs50 - execution history is currently size 134662567 bytes.

Contacting Orsyp support and they advised using ux_raz_fic to initialise the structure. All very well and good but a couple of things.

- This seems a bit heavy handed especially as this is the production system and will involve loss of data
- This does not solve the underlying issue and this process will need to be repeated in a few months time

Is there a way to restrict how long or how much information is held in $U structures like this. In this case the structure is the Journal of Launch interventions.

Other structure that have had problems in the past but seemed to have calmed down with a patch (FX24520) were

u_fmsb50 - launches
u_fmsp50 - Launching parameter storage (provocation)
u_fmtp50 - Launching parameter storage (sessions)

Is there any reason for the Exchange engine to go down? This is Windows 2003 environment, non-clustered. This is happening two to three times a day, at what seem to be random times.

Solved : Successful IU_RTS run .. is a dream ?!

Hi,

Greetings to all !!

We have $U V5.0 running in a two node OpenVMS cluster (runs on both the ndoes).

During every maintenance, we shut down $U in one of the node and run the IU_RTS job from the other node.

Not any time we have had a complete reorganization of all FDL $U database files. ( Failing due to "File locked currently by another user" error)

Is this a normal behaviour?

The below files have not been successfully reorganized most of the times:

File name Significance
------------------------------------------------
U_FMSB50.001	Expected launches
U_FMCX50.001	Job monitor
U_FMFU50.001	Launch parentage
U_FMLP50.001	Operating events (status)
U_FMER50.001	Expected resource events

Before submitting the IU_RTS job, I delete all Uprocs that are currently running and waiting to be submitted in few minutes. Also the queues where $U jobs is submitted are stopped to avoid new submissions to run.

Is there a "best practice" for a successful reorganization of all FDL files? What is the expected behaviour out of $U Maintenance?

Experts please suggest

Cheers
Venkata

Solved : Purge : uxpurge (IU_PUR) vs Purge on the fly

Hello,

I've been using Dollar Universe for quite some time (back to V4) and was regularly running the IU_PUR / uxpurge purge. The job was launched every day to ensure $U data files would not grow out of control.

I have recently upgraded from V500 to V513 on Unix boxes and V500 to V523 on Windows boxes and I was now considering the use of the purge on the fly (online purge).

Have you any insight / recommendations / comments on the purge on the fly? Should I make the move?

Eric JT

Solved : UXEXE\find command

This doesn't appear to exist in the "Command Line" manual, so presumably it has been added.

I have discovered that this command is case sensitive and, consequently, not performing its duties as expected. Can someone advise what the options are and whether I can force it to be non-case sensitive (like the -i option with the Windows FIND).

This command exists in several places and an example is in our IUMAINTA session, IU_LOGS uproc. I understand that this may have been a bespoke setup but any help is appreciated.

Thanks
John

Solved : Launcher process problems

Hallo everyone

Since a couple of days we have a problem with the Launcher process.
The launcher process stops working without user intervention and sets the wakeupdate to 2099. (see uxlst command below)
As soon as we shut down the $Universe application and restart it, it works again until the same problem occurs again. This problem usually manifests itself every 24 hours.
Does anyone have similar problems or even better, a solution for it?

thanks in advance

Command : uxlst atm all partage

Motor : Launcher
State : Started
Machine : migzmc21 , Pid : 6301
Launched : 09/10/2008 , at : 074116
Stopped : 09/10/2008 , at : 082555
Wakeup : 31/12/2099 , at : 235900
Motor : Calculator
State : Started
Machine : migzmc21 , Pid : 4517
Launched : 08/10/2008 , at : 004909
Stopped : 07/10/2008 , at : 140802
Wakeup : 09/10/2008 , at : 082800
Motor : Exchanger
State : Started , Cycle : 000120
Machine : migzmc21 , Pid : 4596
Launched : 08/10/2008 , at : 004919
Stopped : 07/10/2008 , at : 140802
Wakeup : 09/10/2008 , at : 082604
Motor : Supervisor
State : Started
Machine : migzmc21 , Pid : 4615
Launched : 08/10/2008 , at : 004925
Stopped : 07/10/2008 , at : 140801
Wakeup : 18/10/2008 , at : 000000

Solved : ux_raz_fic/uxrazfic tool

Hello,

as we have several topics mentioning the use or possibility to use the "ux_raz_fic", here are some explanations and comments:

ux_raz_fic/uxrazfic (depending on the OS) allows to reinitialize a Dollar Universe data file. It empties the data file and the associated index file.

ux_raz_fic/uxrazfic should only be used for a corrupted data file - the reorganization can only retrieve corrupted index files.

In some specific cases, the ux_raz_fic can be used to reinitialize a data file when it has become too large and cannot be purged or causes very poor response time or disk space issues.

Dollar Access (Orsyp technical support) recommend not to use ux_raz_fic/uxrazfic without their prior agreement and a safety backup.

Michel
